Retaining Walls & Concrete Masonry

A properly built retaining wall controls erosion, creates usable space, and can be a design feature that enhances your property for decades.

Why a Well-Built Retaining Wall Protects Your Property

When your yard has a slope or grade change, soil wants to move downhill. Over time, rain, irrigation, and foot traffic accelerate that movement and can cause erosion that damages landscaping, undermines structures, and creates drainage problems for your home or neighboring properties. A retaining wall stops that from happening by holding the soil in place.

Beyond the structural function, a retaining wall can transform an unusable sloped area into a flat, functional space — a garden bed, a seating area, or a level extension of your yard. Done right, they look great too. In the Surprise, AZ area, we build retaining walls that handle our soil conditions, the monsoon season's heavy rain events, and the year-round heat that can accelerate deterioration in lesser-quality materials.

Prime Surprise Concrete Company handles retaining walls and masonry work for residential and commercial properties throughout the West Valley. See everything we build on our concrete contractor home page.

Types of Retaining Walls We Build

We work with several materials and wall types depending on the height required, load conditions, and appearance goals. Here is what we offer:

  • Concrete Block (CMU) Walls: The most common choice for residential and commercial retaining walls in Arizona. Concrete masonry units are strong, handle heat well, and can be plastered or painted to match your home's exterior.
  • Poured Concrete Walls: For taller walls, steep grade changes, or situations where a thinner wall profile is needed, poured concrete with rebar reinforcement provides maximum strength. These are engineered walls for demanding applications.
  • Segmental Retaining Walls: Dry-stacked segmental block systems like Allan Block or Versa-Lok offer a natural, textured appearance without mortar. They work well for shorter walls, terraced landscapes, and garden borders.
  • Concrete Masonry Planters and Garden Walls: Not all masonry walls are retaining walls. We also build decorative masonry planters, low garden walls, privacy screens, and decorative block features that add structure and beauty to your outdoor space.

If your project involves creating new usable yard space behind a retaining wall, we can also pour a new patio or flatwork surface on the leveled ground. See our concrete patio installation service for details.

What Goes Into a Properly Built Retaining Wall

A retaining wall that fails is almost always due to one of three things: no drainage, a footing that was not deep or wide enough, or a wall that was not sized for the actual load it is holding back. We build walls that do not have those problems.

Proper Footing Depth

The footing must extend below the frost line (less of a concern in Arizona, but the depth still matters for load distribution) and into stable, undisturbed soil. A shallow footing is the most common cause of wall rotation.

Gravel Backfill and Drainage

We backfill with compacted gravel directly behind the wall and include weep holes or drain pipe at the base to release water pressure rather than letting it build up and push the wall.

Rebar Reinforcement

CMU and poured concrete walls taller than a few feet are filled with concrete and reinforced with rebar at appropriate spacing. This converts the wall from a gravity structure to a reinforced system capable of handling larger loads.

Batter and Setback

Taller segmental walls are built with a slight backward lean and each course set back from the one below it. This creates a wall that leans into the load rather than being pushed straight back by it.

For commercial sites with significant grade changes or large retaining structures, our team can work alongside a structural engineer or refer you to one. We also coordinate with our commercial concrete services team for large-scale site work.

Retaining Wall Questions Answered

Here are straightforward answers to what homeowners and property owners in Surprise, AZ most often ask us about retaining walls and masonry.

In most Arizona jurisdictions, retaining walls under 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing can be built without a structural engineer's stamp. Walls between 4 and 6 feet may require a permit and engineering review depending on the city or county. Walls over 6 feet almost always require engineered drawings and inspections. Surcharge loads — like vehicles driving near the top of a wall, or a building load above the wall — lower the threshold at which engineering is required. We will help you understand what applies to your specific project before any work begins.

It depends on the height needed, the load behind the wall, your budget, and the look you want. Concrete block walls are the most common choice for residential properties in Arizona — they are strong, durable, handle our heat well, and can be finished or painted to blend with your home. Poured concrete walls are better for taller applications or where a thinner profile is needed. Timber walls are low-cost but degrade over time in our climate. We will walk you through the options for your specific site and give you an honest recommendation.

Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall from soil moisture and rain. Over time, that pressure pushes the wall outward and can cause it to crack, tilt, or fail entirely. Every retaining wall we build includes gravel backfill behind the wall and weep holes or drainage pipe to allow water to escape rather than accumulate. This is not optional — it is the single biggest factor in whether a retaining wall holds up for 20 years or starts leaning in 5.
